Mike awakens from a crash on an unknown planet where he is alone and injured in a way that affects his memory. He faces certain death, but is saved by a human inhabitant. She trains him to survive in the desert and how to defend himself against the dreaded Eagle-Lion God, Anzu.
Nergal is on the way with an advance party to take custody of Anzu's body, should Mike be successful during his battle with Anzu. He hears Mike's trainer as she screams in anguish, which spurs him on. However, his company is nearly killed during a space anomaly later thought to be a trap set by Anzu. On the way back to Mars, Nergal's company is attacked by an unseen force. After struggling through the attack, they are mysteriously transported to a point near Mars, along with the planet now known as the Nation of Elam. The time-shift reverts to present-time. The idea that Anzu was responsible for the attacks becomes weak. Other events point to another entity: Yelop.
Corruption of an Assembly member, the main author of the Book of Truths, is exposed in front of a session. The corrupt member, Menniphar, attempts to murder Nergal and the inhabitant, Lammon. Following this event, Menniphar is murdered by the suspected doctor who came over with the life disks during the earlier Aeterna Incident. The suspect escapes through a prolapse of space, which alarms the gods.
Earlier, Inanna and Terri undergo schism while assured that evil has been destroyed. Terri remains on Mars. Inanna returns to her own planet. Terri buries Mike's essence near her home. She visits him often, but cannot live easily knowing that she deceived him and possibly caused his death. The Inner Circle offers Terri a new position in the service. She has had enough and declines. However, after months of sleepless nights and images that haunt her, she changes her mind.
Nergal, Laura, Yan and Roger approach Lammon in secret to offer her the opportunity to join the gods as Piniker, the goddess of Elam, of love, and of war. Elam will become an ally and settle into the orbit once occupied by Earth. Mars is moving in to balance the orbit. Together, as the Great One, they work to prepare against an evil on a different level.
