About
Hard Science Fiction
We believe in science fiction and the promise of scientific advancement to change the world. Science is a product of our creation, a uniquely human endeavor (as far as we know.) Science has the power to destroy, tear-down and disrupt, but also has the sublime power to heal, improve, and affirm our humanity. Science fiction tells stories that revolve around that very human creation, and explores the consequences of the relentless drive to push the boundaries of what is possible.
We define hard science fiction to mean that the science in a story is plausible, consistent, and well thought-out...
“Hard” science fiction is always subjective. What one person considers "hard" another will consider fantastic. We define hard science fiction to mean that the science in a story is plausible, consistent, and well thought-out, and that the science in the story, even if completely made-up, is central to the plot such that the story falls apart without it. Think of Asimov's "Foundation" without psychohistory or Herbert's "Dune" without hydration cycles, the science in those stories are not real, but they are so important to the plot that the story would not exist without it.
Our Mission
We exist to assist, promote, and perpetuate the writing of hard science fiction.
To that end, we:
- promote authors and books that publish hard science fiction via interviews and reviews of their stories
- publish short fiction with a hard science fiction angle
- publish essays on topics germane to hard science fiction
- publish book reviews that specifically look at stories from a hard science fiction lens
- attempt to link authors with technical reviewers who can advise on the science of their stories
- provide a community of support for authors to encourage each other in their writing, and for fans to connect and discuss the stories they love
