Thomas Neale, a former beachcomber on a remote South Pacific island, had reluctantly become a star nomad.
Working in conjunction with an advanced extra-terrestrial AI known as Kambani, the intellectual gulf between them dramatically affected their starkly contrasting lives. The AI was a solitary sentient lifeform dedicated to exploring the galaxy to acquire its hidden truths. Yet the human had exceeded the alien's ambitious expectations in a self-indulgent personal quest. Having succeeded in augmenting the AI's purely analytical perspective on the Universe, Thomas embarked on his long journey back to Earth.
His 50,000-year absence was an exceedingly long time for him to be away from home, and Earth had undergone many significant changes. Unexpectedly, life amongst the stars had more appeal than the unfamiliar lifestyles his planet could now offer. Even the opportunity to settle down and start a family challenged his loyalties between an exciting alien companion and a loving, human relationship. However, the choice was not his to make.

The Archivists had ordered Kambani to return the human to their homeworld near the galactic core, leaving Thomas, once again, to become a reluctant pawn in a game he didn't fully understand.
