Upon reading this book the late A.S.A. Harrison described it as “experimental literary science fiction”. It is not exactly a novel but a collection of over two hundred passages that purport to be written by two dozen different contributors. Some are conventional narrative, some prose poems, some are poetry and others encyclopedia entries. It is a mosaic; where each passage contrasts those that precede and follow.
Conceived of around 1997 and written in 2009, it is a history assembled to describe a special time and place during a period of social upheaval and revolution against a oppressive regime.
In the universe in which it is set it is centuries from now and dozens of colonies exist within forty light years of Earth.
Set in a city built in the atmosphere of Saturn, this is a book about light and colour, beauty and justice, about how profoundly a place can influence the people who live there and about the peaks and troughs of human experience.
Where you are is instrumental to who you become. This is a story of a special place, the remarkable people there and what they accomplished in their service to the Revolution. It is about the rise and fall of people and of nations. Told by the many people who were there from when the world changed utterly, this is the story in their own words of how we fought the government of the Center and were the Resistance in those years.
“The epic scope of A.S.’s novel is reminiscent of other works containing
precisely imagined worlds: Frank Herbert's Dune and J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings come to mind. His Saturn (a great setting, I liked the stationary storms at the poles and the hovering cities) is marvellously detailed and immersive. This is a very promising debut.”
-Christopher Dewdney, prize-winning author of seventeen books including Acquainted with the Night, adapted into a Gemini award-winning documentary and most recently 18 Miles, a literary nonfiction book about Earth’s atmosphere.
“A.S.’s fierce imagination and intelligence make him a writer to watch."
-Barbara Gowdy, member of the Order of Canada, Trillium Book Award-winning, bestselling author of eight books, including The White Bone and We So Seldom Look on Love.
