Statistics About Hard Science Fiction Titles Published in January 2025

We tracked 233 new English language hard science fiction titles published in January. We found these publications can be broken down into these general categories (we allow books to be in more than one category):

• Artificial Intelligence and Consciousness (59 books)
• Time and Reality Manipulation (20 books)
• Cosmic and Extraterrestrial Encounters (33 books)
• Survival and Dystopian Futures (43 books)
• Societal and Political Commentary (71 books)
• Exploration and Adventure (29 books)
• Identity and Transformation (24 books)
• Quantum Mechanics and Its Paradoxes (17 books)
• Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (10 books)

The average length of the books were around 190 pages, with the longest coming in at 1,986 pages (a bound collection of 3 books) and the shortest at just 2 pages!

Most titles (123) had less than 150 pages, and 67 titles had less than 75 pages. Here is the distribution of page lengths:

Of these books, from what we can tell, only 40 of them are available anywhere but Amazon and we only found 3 of them at Barnes & Nobel. These data are not perfect, though, and it is likely that we missed some. In the coming months we hope to add a lot more nuance for how we check for books at various outlets. It is a surprisingly complicated task.
